Brierly, James Leslie C.B.E., (1881-1955)

Emeritus Professor of International Law in the University of Oxford. Born September 9 and died December 20. Son of Sydney Herbert Brierly, woolen manufacturer of Huddersfield. Educated Charterhouse and Brasenose College, Oxford where he was a classical scholar, elected to prize Fellowship in Law at All Souls in 1906 and called to the Bar by Lincoln's Inn in 1907. In 1914 granted a commission in the Wiltshire Regiment and later served on the staff of the Adjutant-General in the War Office and was appointed Order of the British Empire. After the armistice he served as Deputy Assistant Adjutant General in the Army of the Black Sea with the brevet of Major. Married Mrs.Ada Foreman in 1920 and had one son. 1920 Professor of Law in the University of Manchester, 1922 succeeded Sir Henry Erle Richards in the Chichele Chair of International Law, published in the British Yearbook of International Law in 1924 and contributed long series of articles. He lectured at the Hague Academy of International Law on two occasions, a British member of the committee of experts for the codification of of international law which was appointed by the Council of The League of Nations in 1924.
